equation of a hyperbola

For a hyperbola centered at $(h, k)$ there are two different standard equations:

To make the hyperbola open left and right: $\frac{{(x - h)}^{2}}{a^{2}} - \frac{{(y - k)}^{2}}{b^{2}} = 1$ .

To make the hyperbola open up and down: $\frac{{(y - k)}^{2}}{a^{2}} - \frac{{(x - h)}^{2}}{b^{2}} = 1$ .
