A matrix is a rectangular arrangement or array of elements. The dimensions of a matrix ${\displaystyle mxn}$ identify how many rows and columns a specific matrix has. ${\displaystyle m}$ represents the number of rows and ${\displaystyle n}$ represents the number of columns. Assuming that the matrix name is ${\displaystyle A}$, the matrix dimensions would be written as ${\displaystyle A_{\text{mxn}}}$.

${\displaystyle m}$ is the number of rows. In this case, the number of rows ${\displaystyle m}$ is ${\displaystyle 4}$.

${\displaystyle n}$ is the number of columns. In this case, the number of columns ${\displaystyle n}$ is ${\displaystyle 4}$.
