base: 1. The bottom of a plane figure or three-dimensional figure. 2. The number that is raised to various powers to generate the principal counting units of a number system. 3. An aqueous substance that can accept hydrogen ions.

base 10: the numbering system in common use, in which each place to the left or right of the decimal represents a power of 10.

bar graph: A visual representation of horizontal and vertical bars or lines to represent data.

bell curve: The shape of the graph that indicates the normal distribution.

benchmark: Point of reference used in estimation.

binomial: A polynomial with two terms. Example: (2x+3)

binomial distribution: In probability, a binomial distribution gives the probabilities of k outcomes A (or n-k outcomes B) in n independent trials for a two-outcome experiment in which the possible outcomes are denoted A and B.

binomial theorem: In mathematics, a theorem that specifies the complete expansion of a binomial raised to any positive integer power.

bisect: To divide into two congruent parts.

box-and-whiskers plot: A type of graph used in data management particularly useful in showing the spread of the distribution of the data.

broken-line graph: A type of graph used in data management where the data points are joined by line segments.
